We accomplish more working together for our community
We have many excellent people working to make our community better. As we continue to improve equality and meet the needs of our community, it’s important that we all work together and keep things moving forward. Over the last several years, I’ve seen some obstacles that we must overcome to keep us moving in a positive direction. There are things that we can do to ensure we make progress and further our causes rather than taking steps backward.
First, I think it is important that we all respect each other and each other’s opinions. Too many times organizations or causes lose momentum because of differences of opinions.
When we have positive, constructive discussions that respect everyone, we all benefit. We should not only welcome and listen to other opinions but also seek differing opinions to better form our own opinions.
Second, we should all be kind and considerate. This goes along with respecting other people’s opinions. If you disagree, there is no need for name calling, intimidation or violence.
Third, we must all work together to reach our goals. That doesn’t mean we all have to be doing the same thing. We can and should support different causes and belong to different organizations. We just shouldn’t work against each other. It can be difficult to listen to and try to understand opinions so far from your own. It can be impossible sometimes to imagine yourself in someone else’s shoes. But, I’ve always felt disagreements and constructive dialogue lead to more knowledge and understanding.
I’m not saying we should be open to listening to hate speech or tolerate haters. What I am saying is don’t become something you are supposed to be fighting against while supporting your own cause. Don’t go down to their level. Let’s lead by example, be open-minded and show respect. The ultimate goal of all the organizations, businesses and churches in the Rainbow Pages is equal, fair and just treatment for all. We believe people should be respected no matter their race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, economic situation or anything else. Let’s all make a commitment to keep moving forward and do our part to make Southwest Florida and the world we live in a little better place tomorrow than it is today. Let’s keep marching forward, toward a world where equality is a given, not something we have to work toward.
